‘Iranian spy’ arrested in UK nuclear missile base’

Two people have been arrested after allegedly trying to enter a nuclear naval base in Scotland.

A man, 34, who was reportedly Iranian, and a woman, 31, were inside a car when he approached the gate at HM Naval Base Clyde, known as Faslane, on Thursday.

Sources told The Times they were denied entry because they didn’t have the right passes, but then were arrested for allegedly acting suspiciously.

They did not enter the facility and the Ministry of Defence and Police Scotland are investigating.

The Sun reported that the two people were both suspected Iranian spies, however The Times reported the woman’s nationality is not known.

Metro has contacted the police for more information, but they declined to comment further.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ‘Around 5pm on Thursday, 19 March, 2026, we were made aware of two people attempting to enter HM Naval Base Clyde.

According to the Royal Navy, the base is home of the submarine service, including the nation’s nuclear deterrent, and the new generation of ‘hunter-killer submarines.’

The incident comes amid heighted fears of hostile attacks in Britain from Iran following the US and Israel’s strikes on February 28.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been killed in the strikes, alongside two senior Iranian officials, Defence Chief Ali Larijani and Intelligence Minister Esmaeil Khatib.

Iran has responded by launching attacks on Israel and US-allied states in the Gulf.

The current threat of a terror attack in the UK is ‘substantial’, meaning an attack is likely. The Government has said it is keeping this under review.

This afternoon, the Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi criticised the ‘negative and biased approach of Britain’ towards the US-Israeli military action against Iran, as well as the UK’s decision to provide military bases for the US to use during the Iran War.

In a post in Farsi on Telegram, Mr Araghchi said he told Ms Cooper: ‘These actions will definitely be considered as participation in aggression and will be recorded in the history of relations between the two countries.

‘At the same time, we reserve our inherent right to defend the country’s sovereignty and independence.’

Downing Street defended the UK’s position.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: ‘So our position is very clear. We didn’t participate in the initial strikes, and we’re not getting drawn into the wider war.

‘We have authorised the US to use our bases for a specific defensive and limited purpose in response to Iran’s continued and outrageous aggression, and we’ve always said that this is the best way to eliminate the urgent threat and restore a path to diplomacy.’
